Where Soybean Is Grown
Madhya Pradesh was long called the "soya state", with Ujjain, Dewas, Indore, Shajapur, Sehore, Dhar and Mandsaur the main districts. Maharashtra has caught up, with Latur, Washim, Akola, Amravati, Nagpur and Buldhana, and Rajasthan (Kota, Jhalawar, Baran) is the third state. Karnataka and Telangana grow smaller crops.
How Soybean Is Grown and Processed
Soybean is sown with the monsoon and harvested in about 100 days. Yields in India are low compared with the Americas because the crop is rain-fed; erratic rain at sowing or harvest causes big swings. Most beans go to solvent extraction plants that produce crude soy oil (refined for cooking) and de-oiled soymeal. Soymeal is India's main poultry-feed protein and is exported to Southeast Asia, Bangladesh and Europe when prices allow.

Quality and Price Drivers
Soybean is traded on oil content, moisture and freedom from damaged and green beans. Indian soybean and soymeal prices move with world soybean prices, Indian edible oil import duties and domestic poultry demand. Soymeal exports are viable only when Indian prices are competitive with South American meal, so export volumes vary greatly year to year.
