Sunflower: A Small Crop, A Big Oil

Sunflower oil is one of India's most popular cooking oils, especially in the South, but India grows only a small part of what it consumes. Most sunflower oil is imported, which makes refiners and importers the key players in this trade.

Where Sunflower Is Grown

Indian sunflower is concentrated in Karnataka (Kalaburagi, Raichur, Ballari, Koppal, Vijayapura), with smaller areas in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Odisha. The area has fallen sharply since the 1990s because of low yields, bird damage and competition from other crops, and the government now promotes hybrid seed to revive it.

How the Trade Works

Because domestic seed is limited, India imports crude sunflower oil, refines it at port-based refineries in Kandla, Mundra, Kakinada, Chennai, Mangaluru and Haldia, and sells it under brands. Prices depend heavily on the Black Sea harvest, freight and Indian import duty, which the government changes to balance farmer and consumer interests.

Quality and Price Drivers

Domestic sunflower seed is valued by oil content (around 35–40 per cent). Refined sunflower oil prices in India follow world sunflower oil prices from the Black Sea and Argentina, the rupee, and Indian import duty. Supply disruptions in the Black Sea region have shown how exposed Indian kitchens are, which is one reason the government wants to revive domestic sunflower.
