Overview

Cold stores, pack houses, pre-coolers, ripening chambers and reefer transport reduce losses of fruits, vegetables and other perishables.

How It Works in Practice

India loses a significant share of its fruits and vegetables after harvest because of weak cold chains. Integrated cold chains link pack houses and pre-coolers near farms to reefer trucks, distribution cold stores and ripening chambers in cities.

Rules and Support

Subsidies for cold chain come under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, the National Horticulture Board and the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana.

What It Means for Farmers and Traders

Most of India's cold-storage capacity is single-commodity potato stores in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Punjab. Multi-commodity stores, onion-specific storage and ripening chambers for banana and mango are the main growth areas.
