Consultants and Intermediaries

Between the farmer and the final buyer stand many intermediaries. Knowing who they are, and what each does, helps buyers and sellers deal with the right people.

Commission Agents (Arhtiyas)

Licensed commission agents in every APMC mandi receive farmers' produce, arrange auctions, weigh, bag and load, pay farmers and collect from buyers, earning a commission set by the state. In Punjab and Haryana they also handle government procurement. Outside buyers usually work through a trusted local agent.

Brokers and Buying Agents

Brokers match buyers and sellers in pulses, edible oils, spices, cotton and other trades, often on phone and messaging groups, for a small brokerage. Buying agents act for exporters, processors and foreign importers, sourcing, inspecting and supervising loading in the producing regions.

Customs and Freight

Customs brokers (CHAs) and freight forwarders handle export documents, container booking, fumigation and port clearance at Mundra, Kandla, JNPT, Chennai, Kakinada, Kolkata and other ports. Exporters choose agents experienced in their crop, because each has its own inspection and fumigation rules.
