Where Groundnut Is Grown
Gujarat grows the largest crop, mainly in Saurashtra: Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar and Bhavnagar. Rajasthan has become the second big state, especially Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Churu. Tamil Nadu (Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Pudukkottai), Andhra Pradesh (Anantapur, Kurnool) and Karnataka (Chitradurga, Tumakuru) follow.
How Groundnut Is Grown
Groundnut is sown with the monsoon on light, sandy-loam soils. The flowers bend into the soil, where the pods form underground. There are two main types: bold/runner types (Gujarat and Rajasthan) and smaller Java/Spanish types (Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka). Too much rain at harvest causes sprouting and fungal damage, and aflatoxin is the main export quality concern, so exporters run testing labs and use sorting machines.

Grades and Price Drivers
Export kernels are sold by count per ounce (for example 40/50, 50/60, 60/70 for bold types and 70/80, 80/90 for Java) and as HPS (hand-picked selected) or machine-sorted. Oil millers buy on oil content. Prices depend on the Gujarat crop, demand from Southeast Asian buyers, competition from Argentina, China and Africa, and edible oil prices.
