Brinjal: India's Native Vegetable

Brinjal, or baingan, is native to India and grown in an enormous range of shapes and colours, from the large round bharta brinjal of the north to small purple and green types in the south. India is the world's second-largest producer.

Where and How Brinjal Is Grown

West Bengal is the largest producer, followed by Odisha, Gujarat, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, with large areas also in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Brinjal is transplanted from nurseries and picked over several months. Local varieties are valued: Udupi Mattu Gulla (Karnataka) and Jalgaon Bharit Vangi (Maharashtra) hold GI tags. Shoot and fruit borer is the main pest; the government placed a moratorium on Bt brinjal in 2010, so farmers rely on integrated pest management.

Uses and Value Chain

Brinjal is a daily vegetable across India, cooked as baingan bharta, sambar, curries and fries. It is sold almost entirely fresh through vegetable APMCs and local markets, with small volumes exported to the Gulf and the UK.

Quality and Grading

Buyers want glossy, firm fruit of the local preferred shape and colour, without borer holes or bruises. Regional preferences are strong: large round brinjal sells in the north, small round purple and green types in the south, and long types in the east.

Price Drivers

Because brinjal is grown year-round in many states, prices are relatively stable but rise during heavy monsoon rain and fall in winter gluts.
