Tomato: The Vegetable Whose Price Makes Headlines

Tomato is grown almost everywhere in India and eaten in almost every dish, yet it cannot be stored for long. That is why tomato prices can jump ten-fold in a few weeks after heavy rain, and crash just as quickly when fields come into full harvest.

Where Tomato Is Grown

In Andhra Pradesh, Chittoor and Annamayya districts around Madanapalle grow large crops. In Karnataka, Kolar and Chikkaballapur are the big belt. Maharashtra grows tomato around Narayangaon and Junnar (Pune), Nashik and Sangamner. Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh (summer) supply the rest.

How Tomato Is Grown and Traded

Almost all commercial tomato is hybrid, raised in nurseries and transplanted, increasingly with drip irrigation, mulching and staking. Viral diseases and heavy rain are the main risks. Tomatoes move from the field in crates to the auction markets the same or next day and reach cities within two to three days. Because supply from one region rarely overlaps with another for long, traders follow the crop from state to state through the year.

Peak southern supply

Kolar and Madanapalle supply most of the year, with peaks in summer.

Lean months

July–August, when monsoon rain damages crops and prices often spike.

Winter

Plentiful supply from Maharashtra, MP and the plains; prices are usually low.

Quality and Grading

Tomatoes are graded by size, colour stage and firmness. Traders sending fruit long distances buy at the "breaker" or turning stage so that it ripens on the way. Round, firm, thick-skinned hybrids are preferred for transport; processing varieties need high solids and deep red colour.
