Where and How Tuberose Is Grown

West Bengal (Nadia, Purba Medinipur around Panskura and Kolaghat, Howrah, North 24 Parganas) is the leader. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra follow. Tuberose is planted from bulbs and flowers for two to three years. Single types are sold as loose flowers and extracted for perfume; double types are sold as long cut spikes.

Uses and Value Chain

Loose single tuberose flowers are strung into garlands, veni and bridal decorations, and are a staple of South Indian and Bengali weddings. Double tuberose spikes go to florists and event decorators. Single flowers are also extracted for tuberose concrete and absolute, used in fine perfumes; India is one of the few major producers.

Quality and Grading

Loose flowers are sold by weight and must be fresh, white and unopened. Cut spikes are graded by length and number of florets. Flowers must reach the market within hours of harvest, so growers cluster near rail lines and highways to Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Price Drivers

Wedding seasons, Durga Puja in Bengal and other festivals push prices up; summer gluts push them down. Nematodes and bulb rot reduce yields in old fields, so growers replant every two to three years.

Planting

Bulbs planted in February–April.

Flowering

From June; peak summer and monsoon.

Demand peaks

Weddings, Durga Puja and the winter season.
