Cut Roses
Long-stemmed cut roses are grown in climate-controlled polyhouses around Pune (Talegaon floriculture park), Bengaluru, Hosur and Nashik, and in Himachal Pradesh. Growers time their crop for Valentine's Day, when exports to Europe, Japan and the Gulf peak, and for the wedding season. The International Flower Auction Bangalore handles large volumes.
Desi Roses and Rose Products
Fragrant loose roses (Edward, Damask types) are grown in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for garlands and religious use. Pushkar (Ajmer) is known for gulkand and rose water. Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh is India's perfume city, where rose and other flowers are distilled into attar by traditional deg-bhapka stills; Kannauj attar has a GI tag.

Quality and Grading
Cut roses are graded by stem length (from 40 cm to over 80 cm), bud size and colour; red varieties such as Top Secret and Taj Mahal dominate Valentine's exports. Loose desi roses are sold by weight and must be fresh and fragrant. Rose petals for gulkand and distillation must be picked early in the morning.
Price Drivers
Cut-rose prices peak in the first half of February for Valentine's Day and again in the wedding season. Desi rose prices follow festival and temple demand. Freight availability and costs to Europe decide export margins.
