Cut roses are graded by stem length (from 40 cm to over 80 cm), bud size and colour; red varieties such as Top Secret and Taj Mahal dominate Valentine's exports. Loose desi roses are sold by weight and must be fresh and fragrant. Rose petals for gulkand and distillation must be picked early in the morning.
Cut-rose prices peak in the first half of February for Valentine's Day and again in the wedding season. Desi rose prices follow festival and temple demand. Freight availability and costs to Europe decide export margins.
