Where and How Jasmine Is Grown
Tamil Nadu is the leader, with Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Theni, Tirunelveli, Erode (Sathyamangalam) and Kanyakumari the main districts. Karnataka grows Mysore, Udupi and Hadagali jasmine, all GI-tagged. Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and Maharashtra (mogra) follow. Buds are hand-picked every morning before they open and must reach the market the same day. Prices fall in summer gluts and rise sharply in winter, when production drops and weddings peak.
Jasmine for Perfume
Jasmine grandiflorum and sambac flowers are solvent-extracted near the farms, mainly around Sathyamangalam and Madurai, to make jasmine concrete, which is refined into absolute for perfume and flavour. India is one of the world's main suppliers.

Quality and Price
Jasmine is sold by weight early each morning in Madurai, Sathyamangalam, Bengaluru and Chennai. Buyers want tight white buds that will open in the evening; open or browned flowers are worth far less. Madurai malli prices can rise more than ten-fold between summer gluts and winter shortages, especially on festival and wedding days.
Exports
Fresh jasmine strings and buds are flown to Singapore, Malaysia, the Gulf and other countries with large Tamil and Malayali communities, packed in thermocol boxes with ice gel to survive the journey.
