What It Is
India's flowers are turned into some of the world's most valued perfume materials: jasmine and tuberose concrete and absolute, rose oil, rose water, gulkand, and the traditional attars of Kannauj.
How It Is Made
Concretes are made by solvent extraction of fresh flowers near the farms; attars by deg-bhapka distillation of flowers into sandalwood oil; rose water by steam distillation.
Uses and Buyers
Perfume houses, flavour companies, Ayurvedic and cosmetic makers, and households.
Quality and Standards
Graded by aroma and composition; GI tags cover Kannauj perfume.
Trade and Exports
Tamil Nadu (Madurai, Sathyamangalam) leads in jasmine extraction, Kannauj in attar and Pushkar in rose products.
