Where and How Marigold Is Grown
Karnataka (Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Haveri, Ballari), West Bengal (Kolaghat, Nadia, Howrah), Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh grow it. Marigold is easy to grow from seed or seedlings and flowers in two months. Farmers time planting so that flowers are ready for Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali, when prices can rise several times over. Orange and yellow African marigold (Pusa Narangi Gainda, Pusa Basanti Gainda and hybrids) are the main garland types.
Lutein: The Industrial Market
Large areas of marigold in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are grown under contract for lutein extraction. Petals are dried, pelleted and extracted to make marigold oleoresin and lutein for poultry feed (deeper yolk colour), food colouring and eye-health supplements, much of which is exported.

Quality and Price
Marigold for garlands is sold by weight or by the string. Buyers want bright, compact, fully opened flowers of uniform colour. Prices can rise three to five times in the week before Dussehra and Diwali and fall sharply afterwards, which makes planting dates the farmer's main decision.
