Quality and Price Notes
Loose single tuberose flowers are strung into garlands, veni and bridal decorations, and are a staple of South Indian and Bengali weddings. Double tuberose spikes go to florists and event decorators. Single flowers are also extracted for tuberose concrete and absolute, used in fine perfumes; India is one of the few major producers.
Loose flowers are sold by weight and must be fresh, white and unopened. Cut spikes are graded by length and number of florets. Flowers must reach the market within hours of harvest, so growers cluster near rail lines and highways to Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai.
Wedding seasons, Durga Puja in Bengal and other festivals push prices up; summer gluts push them down. Nematodes and bulb rot reduce yields in old fields, so growers replant every two to three years.
