Where and How Moth Is Grown
Moth is grown almost only in western Rajasthan, with smaller areas in Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra. It survives on as little as 200–300 mm of rain, spreads low over the sand to hold moisture, and is harvested in autumn. Its vines are good fodder for camels and goats. In Maharashtra, sprouted moth (matki) is the base of the famous misal.

Quality and Trade
Bhujia makers want clean, bold moth with low moisture and no insect damage, because the flour must give the bhujia its characteristic crisp texture and taste. Moth is sold whole by farmers to commission agents in Bikaner, Nokha, Churu and Jodhpur mandis, then cleaned and milled into flour by local mills that supply the namkeen units.
Price Drivers
Moth is entirely rain-fed, so a weak monsoon in western Rajasthan can cut the crop sharply and raise prices for snack makers. Demand grows steadily with India's namkeen market, both domestic and export.
