Where Rajma Is Grown
Hill rajma is grown as a summer crop in Jammu & Kashmir (Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Gurez), Himachal Pradesh (Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur) and Uttarakhand (Harsil, Chakrata, Munsyari, Joshimath). These small, flavourful beans fetch much higher prices than plains rajma. Plains rajma is a winter crop in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Bhaderwah Rajmash holds a GI tag.
How Rajma Is Traded
Hill rajma reaches buyers through local cooperatives, small traders, state brands and online sellers. Bulk rajma for restaurants and the plains trade is often imported, and wholesale markets in Delhi and Punjab handle both. Quality depends on uniform size and colour, quick cooking and freedom from weevils.

Varieties
Popular types include the dark-red Kashmiri rajma, the speckled Chitra rajma, the small red Jammu rajma from Bhaderwah, Uttarakhand's Harsil and Munsyari rajma, and the light Sharmili type. Hill rajma is valued for its quick cooking, creamy texture and taste.
Quality and Price Drivers
Buyers look for uniform size and colour, no shrivelled or broken beans, and freedom from weevils. Hill rajma sells at two to three times the price of plains or imported rajma. Prices depend on the hill harvest, import availability and North Indian demand, which peaks in winter.
