Moong: The Light Dal

Moong, or green gram, is the quick-cooking, easily digested dal used in khichdi, dal fry, sprouts, halwa and namkeen. India is the world's largest producer, and Rajasthan alone grows close to half the crop.

Where Moong Is Grown

Rajasthan dominates kharif moong, grown on sandy soils in Nagaur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Tonk, Sikar and Jhunjhunu. Madhya Pradesh has built a large summer moong crop in Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram), Harda and Raisen, sown after wheat on irrigated land. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Bihar, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh also grow it.

How Moong Is Grown and Sold

Moong is a short crop of 60–75 days, which lets farmers fit it between other crops and improves the soil by fixing nitrogen. Varieties such as IPM 2-3, IPM 205-7 (Virat) and SML 668 are popular. Mills sell it as whole moong, moong chilka (split with skin) and moong dhuli (split, skinned). Large volumes go to namkeen makers for moong dal snacks and to sprout and health-food brands.

Quality and Price Drivers

Moong is graded by colour (bright green fetches more), boldness and freedom from weevils and dull, rain-damaged grain. Prices depend on the Rajasthan kharif crop, the MP summer crop, government buying at MSP and the release of buffer stocks. Moong futures are suspended, so mandi prices at Merta City and Jodhpur are watched as benchmarks.
