About Moong
Moong (green gram) is the light, quick-cooking dal used in khichdi, sprouts and namkeen. India is the world's largest producer.
Where Moong Is Grown in Punjab
The main moong districts of Punjab are Ludhiana, Moga, Bathinda, Sangrur. Punjab is India's granary: its irrigated fields give the country's highest wheat and rice yields, and it supplies the largest share of grain to the central pool. It also grows basmati, maize, cotton, potato (including seed potato) and Kinnow.
Season in Punjab
Kharif (main), summer (MP, Punjab, UP) and rabi (south, east). Exact arrival dates in Punjab depend on local sowing and the monsoon, so check current arrivals before planning purchases.
How Moong Is Sold in Punjab
Farm produce is sold through regulated APMC market yards under the state's agricultural produce marketing law, run by the state agricultural marketing board, with many yards linked to eNAM. Almost all wheat and paddy is sold through the mandis via arhtiyas to state agencies and FCI at MSP.

Quality and Price Notes
Moong is graded by colour (bright green fetches more), boldness and freedom from weevils and dull, rain-damaged grain. Prices depend on the Rajasthan kharif crop, the MP summer crop, government buying at MSP and the release of buffer stocks. Moong futures are suspended, so mandi prices at Merta City and Jodhpur are watched as benchmarks.
