About Mustard
Mustard (sarson, rapeseed) is the main oilseed of North and East India. Its pungent kachi ghani oil is the cooking oil of Punjab, UP, Bihar, Bengal and Odisha, and its cake is a cattle feed.
Where Mustard Is Grown in Assam
The main mustard districts of Assam are Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Nagaon. Assam is India's largest tea-growing state and grows rice in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, including the aromatic Joha rice. It is also an important producer of jute, ginger, arecanut, banana, rapeseed-mustard, masoor and vegetables.

Mustard seed is traded on oil content (often 42 per cent basis) and moisture. Kachi ghani oil buyers want strong pungency, which comes from fresh, well-dried seed. Prices depend on the Rajasthan crop, edible oil import duties, and world rapeseed and palm oil prices. NAFED buys at MSP when prices fall below it.
