Where and How Guava Is Grown
Uttar Pradesh (Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Lucknow, Varanasi), Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat are the main growers. Farmers manage flowering to harvest in winter, when fruit quality is best. High-density planting and the large VNR Bihi and Taiwan Pink types are spreading through Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Uses and Value Chain
Guava is mostly eaten fresh. It is also made into pulp, juice, nectar, jelly, cheese (a firm sweet) and toffee, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Pink-fleshed guava gives an attractive pulp and juice, which has helped the new varieties.
Quality and Grading
Fruit is picked at colour break, when it turns from dark to light green, and graded by size and freedom from fruit-fly and anthracnose damage. Large VNR Bihi and Taiwan Pink fruit is often wrapped in foam nets and sold in modern retail.
Price Drivers
Winter guava (mrig bahar) from Prayagraj and Kaushambi is of the best quality and price. Rainy-season fruit is cheaper because of fruit-fly damage. Wilt disease that kills trees is a long-term threat in several states.
