Grapes: Nashik's Export Success

India's grape industry is concentrated in Maharashtra, and Nashik grows most of the table grapes India exports. Through APEDA's GrapeNet residue-monitoring system, Indian grapes reach supermarkets in the Netherlands, the UK and across Europe, while Sangli turns grapes into raisins.

Where Grapes Are Grown

Maharashtra grows most of India's grapes: Nashik (Niphad, Dindori, Pimpalgaon) for table grapes and exports, Sangli (Tasgaon) and Solapur for raisins, and Pune. Karnataka (Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur), Tamil Nadu (Theni's Cumbum valley) and Andhra Pradesh grow the rest. Popular table varieties are Thompson Seedless and its selections, Sharad Seedless (black), Crimson Seedless and the long Sonaka and Manik Chaman.

How Grapes Are Grown and Exported

Indian vines are pruned twice a year and give one crop in winter. Export growers register their vineyards on GrapeNet and follow residue limits; grapes are pre-cooled, packed and shipped in reefers to Europe within hours of harvest. Raisin makers in Sangli and Vijayapura dry grapes in shade sheds with a dipping oil to give green and golden raisins.

Quality and Grading

Export grapes must have berries of a set minimum diameter (often 16–18 mm for Thompson types), uniform colour, firm attachment to the stem, high sugar and residues within EU limits. Domestic grapes are graded more loosely. Raisins are graded by colour (green, golden, black), size and moisture.

Price Drivers

Unseasonal rain and hail in February–March can crack berries and ruin export lots, sending more fruit to the domestic market and to raisin sheds. Export demand from Europe, freight costs and the euro exchange rate decide export prices.

Pruning

April (foundation) and October (fruit pruning).

Harvest

January to April; export peak February–March.

Raisin making

March to May.
