About Jackfruit
Jackfruit is Kerala's state fruit and the world's largest tree-borne fruit. It is eaten ripe as a fruit and raw as a vegetable and meat substitute, and is increasingly processed into flour, chips and ready-to-cook products.

How It Is Grown
Jackfruit trees grow in home gardens and plantations with little care and bear for decades. Much of the crop has been wasted in the past for lack of processing, which is now changing.

March–August.
Uses and Buyers
Households, chips and papad makers, flour and ready-to-cook brands, and exporters of processed jackfruit.
Quality and Price
Graded by bulb (flake) quality, sweetness and firmness.
Government Role
Jackfruit has no minimum support price, so it is bought almost entirely by private traders, processors and exporters. Government support comes through horticulture and crop missions, market regulation, export promotion and research.
