About Garlic

Garlic is a high-value rabi crop. India is the world's second-largest producer, and the crop is sold fresh, stored for months and dehydrated into flakes and powder.

Where Garlic Is Grown in Rajasthan

The main garlic districts of Rajasthan are Kota, Baran, Jhalawar, Chittorgarh. Rajasthan is India's leading producer of bajra, mustard, moth, guar, coriander, isabgol and cumin, and a major producer of moong, groundnut, barley, chana and wheat. Its dry western districts grow hardy crops on sand, while canal-fed Sri Ganganagar and Chambal-fed Hadoti are its granaries.

State Agencies in Rajasthan

Garlic has no minimum support price, so it is bought almost entirely by private traders, processors and exporters. State marketing bodies regulate the markets and support farmer producer organisations.

Quality and Price Notes

Garlic is graded by bulb diameter (from about 20 mm to over 45 mm), clove size, firmness and skin colour. Big-bulb Ooty and G-282 types fetch the highest prices. Garlic prices are notoriously cyclical: a high-price year leads to heavy planting and a crash the following year. Chinese garlic, which India restricts, has at times entered through neighbouring countries and affected prices.
