About Garlic

Garlic is a high-value rabi crop. India is the world's second-largest producer, and the crop is sold fresh, stored for months and dehydrated into flakes and powder.

Where Garlic Is Grown in Punjab

The main garlic districts of Punjab are Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar. Punjab is India's granary: its irrigated fields give the country's highest wheat and rice yields, and it supplies the largest share of grain to the central pool. It also grows basmati, maize, cotton, potato (including seed potato) and Kinnow.

How Garlic Is Sold in Punjab

Farm produce is sold through regulated APMC market yards under the state's agricultural produce marketing law, run by the state agricultural marketing board, with many yards linked to eNAM. Almost all wheat and paddy is sold through the mandis via arhtiyas to state agencies and FCI at MSP.

State Agencies in Punjab

Garlic has no minimum support price, so it is bought almost entirely by private traders, processors and exporters. State marketing bodies regulate the markets and support farmer producer organisations.

Quality and Price Notes

Garlic is graded by bulb diameter (from about 20 mm to over 45 mm), clove size, firmness and skin colour. Big-bulb Ooty and G-282 types fetch the highest prices. Garlic prices are notoriously cyclical: a high-price year leads to heavy planting and a crash the following year. Chinese garlic, which India restricts, has at times entered through neighbouring countries and affected prices.
