About Peas
Green peas (matar) are India's favourite winter vegetable and its most important frozen vegetable. Dry peas are also used as a cheaper pulse, and India imports yellow peas when its pulse crop is short.

How It Is Grown
Peas are sown in October–November after the monsoon and picked green from December to March. They need cool weather and are grown widely in the north and centre; the hills of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand supply off-season peas in summer. Popular varieties include Arkel, Azad P-3, Pusa Pragati and GS-10.

Green peas: December–March in the plains; April–October from the hills. Dry peas: harvested March–April.
Uses and Buyers
Fresh green peas are sold in vegetable markets; large volumes are shelled, blanched and frozen by processors for year-round sale. Dry peas are split into matar dal and ground into flour, and are used in snacks.
Quality and Price
Green peas are bought on pod fill, sweetness and freshness; frozen peas on size grade and colour. Prices crash in January–February when supply peaks and rise in the off-season.
Government Role
Peas has no minimum support price, so it is bought almost entirely by private traders, processors and exporters. Government support comes through horticulture and crop missions, market regulation, export promotion and research.
