About the Market
Thousands of tractor-loads of onion arrive at Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon on peak days, and are auctioned in the open yard one by one. Buyers include domestic traders who send onions by truck and rail to every state, exporters supplying Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Gulf, and NAFED and NCCF buying for the government buffer stock. When onion prices rise or fall sharply anywhere in India, the first explanation is usually found in Lasalgaon's arrivals.
The Nashik belt's other markets, Vinchur, Yeola, Manmad, Chandwad, Umrane, Satana and Malegaon, together with Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon, handle a very large share of India's onion trade. Pimpalgaon is also a major tomato auction market in season and the centre of Nashik's export grape belt.
Seasons
Late kharif onion arrives from January to March, rabi onion from March to May and then from storage until October, and kharif onion from October to December. Tomato peaks at Pimpalgaon in late summer and autumn; grapes from January to April.

How Trade Works in an Indian Mandi
Farmers bring produce in tractors, trucks or bullock carts to the market yard, where it is unloaded at the shop of a licensed commission agent (arhtiya or dalal). Buyers, including traders, millers, processors and exporters' agents, inspect the lots and bid in an open or tender auction, or increasingly on the eNAM electronic platform. The winning buyer pays a market fee to the APMC, the commission agent takes a small commission, and the farmer is paid. Weighing, cleaning, grading and loading are done by licensed workers in the yard. Daily arrivals and prices are reported to Agmarknet.
Buying from This Market as an Outside Buyer
Buyers from other states or abroad normally work through a licensed local trader or commission agent, who attends the auctions, checks quality, arranges cleaning, grading, bagging and loading, and bills with GST. Before a first deal, ask for samples, agree on the grade, moisture and tolerance for damaged or foreign matter in writing, and decide who pays for loading, transport and insurance. For exports and food processors, a third-party lab test for moisture, residues or aflatoxin is common. Payment is usually made by bank transfer before dispatch or against documents, and many traders now accept eNAM settlement. Prices change daily, so confirm the rate on the day of loading.
Getting There
Lasalgaon lies on the Mumbai–Bhusawal railway line in Niphad taluka, roughly 60–70 km from Nashik city, with rail sidings that have long been used to load onion rakes. Pimpalgaon Baswant is on the Mumbai–Agra highway north of Nashik. The nearest airport is Nashik (Ozar), and onion for export moves by road to JNPT near Mumbai.
