Barley (jau) is a hardy winter grain used mainly for cattle feed and for malt for breweries and malted drinks, with smaller use as sattu and flour.

The main barley districts of Madhya Pradesh are Morena, Bhind, Gwalior, Sagar. Madhya Pradesh is India's soybean state and one of its largest producers of wheat, chana, masoor, urad, garlic, coriander and isabgol.
