What It Is
Cottonseed oil is a cooking and vanaspati oil, and cottonseed cake (khal) is one of India's most important cattle feeds.
How It Is Made
Cottonseed from ginning factories is crushed in expellers to give oil and khal, or de-linted and solvent-extracted to give refined oil and de-oiled cake.
Uses and Buyers
Households in Gujarat and Maharashtra, vanaspati and snack makers, and dairy farmers.
Quality and Standards
Oil must be refined to remove gossypol. Food products must meet FSSAI standards and labelling rules; many are also sold under the AGMARK grading mark, and exporters follow the buying country's rules on residues and contaminants.
Trade and Exports
Kadi, Rajkot and Akola are big cottonseed trading centres; cottonseed oilcake trades on NCDEX.
Where the Raw Material Comes From
Processors buy cottonseed from the main growing states below. Plants are usually built close to these belts, or close to ports for imported raw material, to keep freight low and quality fresh. Tap a state for its districts, markets, season and buyers.
