Where Coconut Is Grown
Kerala, whose name is often linked to the coconut, grows it in every district. Tamil Nadu (Coimbatore, Pollachi, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Kanyakumari), Karnataka (Tumakuru, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada) and Andhra Pradesh (Konaseema, East Godavari) are the other big states. Odisha, West Bengal, Goa and the islands also grow coconut.
Copra, Oil and Other Products
Mature nuts are dried into milling copra for oil, mainly in Kangeyam and Pollachi (Tamil Nadu) and Kozhikode (Kerala). Ball copra, the whole kernel dried inside the shell, is a speciality of Tiptur (Karnataka) and is eaten as dry coconut in the North. Desiccated coconut is made in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Coir is spun around Alappuzha (Kerala) and Pollachi.

Quality and Grading
Milling copra is graded by moisture (ideally around 6 per cent), oil content and freedom from mould; well-dried copra from Kangeyam fetches a premium. Ball copra from Tiptur is graded by size and the white colour of its kernel. Tender coconuts are sold by size and water content to city vendors and packaged coconut-water brands.
Price Drivers
Copra and coconut-oil prices follow the size of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu crop, the price of competing oils such as palm oil, and festival demand. Root wilt disease in Kerala and drought in Tamil Nadu reduce output; government buying of copra at MSP through NAFED supports prices in glut years.
New Products
Virgin coconut oil, coconut milk powder, neera (fresh sap), coconut sugar and activated carbon from shells have grown into important value-added products, many exported.
