Overview

The National Mission on Edible Oils covers oil palm (NMEO-OP) and oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds), aiming to raise domestic oilseed output and cut India's dependence on imported edible oil.

How It Works in Practice

India imports a large share of its edible oil, mainly palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, soybean oil from South America and sunflower oil from the Black Sea region. The mission promotes better seed, more area under mustard, groundnut, soybean, sunflower and sesame, and oil palm in the North East and other suitable areas.

Rules and Support

It supports better seed, area expansion, processing and assured prices for oil palm growers.

What It Means for Farmers and Traders

For oil palm, the mission offers a viability price to growers so they are protected when world palm oil prices fall. Processing, storage and marketing support are also included.
