Overview
Since the International Year of Millets in 2023, India has promoted millets as Shree Anna, with research at ICAR-IIMR, support for start-ups, and millets in public meals.
How It Works in Practice
Millets were promoted as nutri-cereals and climate-smart crops, since they need little water and fertiliser. Governments have added millets to public distribution, school meals and anganwadi meals in several states.
Rules and Support
States run their own millet missions, such as the Odisha Millets Mission.
What It Means for Farmers and Traders
For businesses, the push has created demand for millet flours, snacks, breakfast cereals and ready-to-eat products, and for processing machines suited to small millets.
