Overview
Fertilizers such as urea, DAP, MOP and complex fertilizers are heavily subsidised in India and sold at controlled prices. IFFCO's nano urea and nano DAP are new liquid products.
How It Works in Practice
Urea is sold at a fixed, low price, while phosphatic and potassic fertilizers get a nutrient-based subsidy. Heavy use of cheap urea has led to imbalanced nutrition in many soils, which soil health cards and new products such as neem-coated urea, nano urea and customised fertilizers try to correct.
Rules and Support
The Department of Fertilizers runs the subsidy, and sales are tracked through point-of-sale machines at retailers. Soil health cards guide farmers on fertilizer use.
What It Means for Farmers and Traders
Organic manures, compost, bio-fertilizers and fermented organic manure from biogas plants are promoted for soil health and for organic farming, which also opens premium export markets.
