Overview
India is the world's largest tractor market. Combine harvesters, rotavators, seed drills, Happy Seeders, sprayers and transplanters are spreading fast, often through custom hiring centres.
How It Works in Practice
Custom hiring centres run by FPOs, cooperatives and entrepreneurs rent out tractors, harvesters, seed drills and sprayers by the hour or acre, making mechanisation possible for small farmers. Combine harvesters move from state to state with the harvest, from Madhya Pradesh in March to Punjab in April.
Rules and Support
Government subsidies under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization and custom hiring centres help small farmers use machines they could not afford to own.
What It Means for Farmers and Traders
Machinery that handles crop residue, such as the Happy Seeder, Super Seeder and balers, has been promoted in Punjab and Haryana to reduce stubble burning. Small machines for weeding, harvesting pulses and threshing millets are the next frontier.
