Overview
Crop protection chemicals and biologicals protect crops from insects, diseases and weeds. India is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of agrochemicals.
How It Works in Practice
Insecticides, fungicides and herbicides are sold through hundreds of thousands of dealers, and biological products such as neem formulations, Trichoderma and pheromone traps are growing fast. Integrated pest management, promoted by the government, aims to cut chemical use.
Rules and Support
Products are registered by the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIB&RC). Export crops must meet residue limits of the buying country, so exporters follow approved spray schedules.
What It Means for Farmers and Traders
For exporters, residues are the biggest risk: a single lot above the buying country's limit can be rejected. APEDA's residue-monitoring systems for grapes, pomegranate, okra and other crops, and buyer-mandated spray schedules, are how Indian exporters manage this risk.
