Sikkim became India's first fully organic state in 2016. It is known for large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, Sikkim mandarin, buckwheat and cut flowers such as cymbidium orchids and gerbera.
Sikkim was declared India's first fully organic state in 2016, after phasing out chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Large cardamom, grown under the shade of forest trees, is its most valuable crop, followed by ginger, turmeric, Sikkim mandarin, buckwheat and vegetables. Cut flowers, especially cymbidium orchids, gerbera and anthurium, are grown in greenhouses. Most produce leaves the state through Siliguri in West Bengal.
Produce is sold through the state's organic marketing channels, cooperatives and traders to Siliguri.
