Farming and Trade in Meghalaya
Meghalaya is known for Lakadong turmeric, Khasi mandarin, ginger, pineapple, potato and arecanut. Much of its farming is organic by default, and its produce is traded through Shillong and on to Guwahati.
Meghalaya's hill farming is largely organic by default. Lakadong turmeric from the Jaintia Hills, prized for its very high curcumin content, carries a GI tag, as does the Khasi mandarin. Ginger, potato, pineapple, arecanut, strawberry and broom grass are important cash crops. The Iewduh market in Shillong is one of the oldest traditional markets in the Northeast, and produce moves to Guwahati and onward to the rest of India.
Produce is sold through local markets, cooperatives and traders, with the state promoting FPO-based marketing of ginger, turmeric and fruits.
