Farming and Trade in Manipur
Manipur's valley grows rice, including the GI-tagged Chak-Hao black rice, and its hills grow pineapple, ginger, turmeric, passion fruit and vegetables. Organic and traditional farming is common.
Manipur's farm economy rests on the Imphal valley, where paddy is grown in the monsoon, and on the surrounding hills, where farmers grow pineapple, ginger, turmeric, chillies and vegetables, often on jhum plots. Women play an unusually large role in the trade: the Ima Keithel in Imphal is run entirely by women traders. Black aromatic Chak-Hao rice has a GI tag and growing demand from health-food buyers, and Manipur's pineapple, passion fruit and kachai lemon are sold to other states. The state is promoting FPOs, organic certification and food-processing units to add value locally.
Produce is sold in local markets such as Imphal's women-run Ima Keithel market and through traders to Assam.
