Farming and Trade in Delhi
Delhi grows little itself but is India's biggest trading hub for farm produce. Azadpur is regarded as Asia's largest fruit and vegetable market, Khari Baoli is Asia's largest spice and dry-fruit market, and Narela and Naya Bazar handle grains and pulses. ICAR's Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) is at Pusa, New Delhi.
Delhi's wholesale markets set prices for a large share of North India. Azadpur handles fruits and vegetables from Kashmir, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and beyond; Khari Baoli handles spices and dry fruits from across India and the world; Naya Bazar, Lawrence Road and Narela handle rice, pulses and grains. Delhi is also home to many national agri-trade companies, export houses and research bodies.
Markets are run under the Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board and its market committees.
