What It Is
Rice bran oil is extracted from the bran removed when brown rice is polished into white rice. India is one of the world's largest producers, and rice bran oil is popular as a "heart-healthy" cooking oil and in oil blends.
How It Is Made
Bran from rice mills must be processed quickly because it turns rancid within hours. Solvent extraction plants near rice-milling belts extract crude oil, which is refined. The remaining de-oiled rice bran is a feed ingredient.
Uses and Buyers
Households, restaurants and snack makers; it is also blended with other oils by brands. De-oiled rice bran goes to cattle, poultry and fish feed.
Quality and Standards
Refined rice bran oil is checked for free fatty acids, oryzanol content and colour. Food products must meet FSSAI standards and labelling rules; many are also sold under the AGMARK grading mark, and exporters follow the buying country's rules on residues and contaminants.
Trade and Exports
Major producing belts are Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Odisha. India exports de-oiled rice bran, although exports have at times been restricted to keep feed prices in check.
Where the Raw Material Comes From
Processors buy rice from the main growing states below. Plants are usually built close to these belts, or close to ports for imported raw material, to keep freight low and quality fresh. Tap a state for its districts, markets, season and buyers.
