What It Is
Compound animal feed is the largest single use of Indian maize and soymeal. India has one of the world's largest poultry industries and the largest dairy herd, both of which depend on feed made from farm crops and by-products.
How It Is Made
Feed mills grind and mix maize, soymeal, rice bran, de-oiled cakes, minerals and vitamins into mash or pellets to precise recipes for broilers, layers, dairy cattle or fish.
Uses and Buyers
Poultry integrators, contract broiler farmers, layer farms, dairy cooperatives and fish farmers.
Quality and Standards
Feed makers test raw materials for moisture, protein and aflatoxin, and follow BIS standards for compound feed.
Trade and Exports
Feed demand drives prices of maize, soymeal, rice bran, cottonseed cake and mustard cake across India.
Where the Raw Material Comes From
Processors buy maize from the main growing states below. Plants are usually built close to these belts, or close to ports for imported raw material, to keep freight low and quality fresh. Tap a state for its districts, markets, season and buyers.
