What It Is
Breakfast cereals, sweet corn and popcorn are the consumer-facing side of maize, growing fast in Indian cities.
How It Is Made
Cornflakes are made from maize grits that are cooked, flaked and toasted. Sweet corn is a special maize harvested young and sold fresh, frozen or canned; popcorn uses special varieties whose kernels pop when heated.
Uses and Buyers
Households, cinemas, restaurants, street vendors and modern retail.
Quality and Standards
Food products must meet FSSAI standards and labelling rules; many are also sold under the AGMARK grading mark, and exporters follow the buying country's rules on residues and contaminants.
Trade and Exports
Sweet corn and baby corn are grown around cities and for processors and are also exported in small volumes.
Where the Raw Material Comes From
Processors buy maize from the main growing states below. Plants are usually built close to these belts, or close to ports for imported raw material, to keep freight low and quality fresh. Tap a state for its districts, markets, season and buyers.
