About Mango
India grows about half the world's mangoes, with famous regional varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri and Banganapalle, and a large pulp industry.
Where Mango Is Grown in Maharashtra
The main mango districts of Maharashtra are Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg (Devgad), Raigad. Maharashtra is India's leading producer of onion, grapes, pomegranate, banana (with Gujarat and Andhra), tur, soybean, cotton and sugarcane, and of Alphonso mango and Nagpur orange. Its mandis at Lasalgaon, Latur, Sangli, Solapur and Vashi are among the best known in India.

How Mango Is Sold in Maharashtra

Quality and Price Notes
Table mangoes are graded by weight, colour, absence of spongy tissue (a problem in Alphonso) and freedom from fruit-fly and sap burn. Alphonso is sold by the dozen in wooden boxes and cartons; most other varieties by weight. Pulp makers buy by the tonne and grade pulp by Brix and colour. Ripening with calcium carbide is banned; ethylene ripening chambers are approved.
Unseasonal rain, hail and heat at flowering and fruit set decide each year's crop. Alphonso prices are highest in early season (March) and fall as volumes rise in May. Export demand from the Gulf and the USA, and pulp demand from beverage makers, support farm prices for Totapuri and Alphonso.
