How It Is Grown
Isabgol is a short rabi crop sown in November on light soils. Seed is cleaned, and the husk is separated by milling; the husk is graded by purity (for example 85 to 99 per cent) and mesh size.
Season
Rabi: sown November, harvested February–March.
Uses and Buyers
Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies worldwide, Indian brands and food makers.
Quality and Price
Husk is graded by purity, swelling volume and microbiology; export buyers require pharmacopoeia standards.
Government Role
Isabgol (Psyllium) has no minimum support price, so it is bought almost entirely by private traders, processors and exporters. Government support comes through horticulture and crop missions, market regulation, export promotion and research.
