India's Farm Trade with United Kingdom
The UK, with its large South Asian community, buys Indian basmati rice, fresh vegetables such as okra and gourds, mangoes, spices, pickles and snacks.
Main Indian Farm Products Bought by United Kingdom
- Basmati RiceBasmati is a long-grain, aromatic rice that may be sold under that name only if grown in the GI region at the foot of the Himalaya. It is India's most valuable farm export, sold to more than a hundred countries.
- OkraOkra (bhindi) is one of India's favourite vegetables and an important fresh export to the UK, Europe and the Gulf. India is the world's largest producer.
- MangoIndia grows about half the world's mangoes, with famous regional varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri and Banganapalle, and a large pulp industry.
- Gourds and CucumberBottle gourd (lauki), bitter gourd (karela), ridge gourd, sponge gourd, pumpkin and cucumber are everyday Indian vegetables. India also has a large export industry in gherkins, small cucumbers pickled in brine.
Ports and Logistics
Fresh vegetables and mangoes are mostly air-freighted to London; rice and processed foods go by sea. UK residue and labelling rules apply after its exit from the EU.
How Exports Work
Exporters register with APEDA (for most farm and processed foods), the Spices Board, the Coffee or Tea Boards, or IOPEPC, depending on the product. Shipments need a phytosanitary certificate from India's plant quarantine service, a certificate of origin, and any health or residue certificates required by United Kingdom. India's export policy for some crops, such as onion, rice and wheat, changes often, so exporters check the current DGFT notifications before signing contracts.
