Quality and Price Notes
Loose chrysanthemum is sold by weight for garlands and temple offerings, and is one of the cheapest and most widely used flowers in South Indian cities. Spray and standard types are sold as cut flowers to florists, and potted chrysanthemums are a popular winter plant in North Indian homes and gardens.
Loose flowers must be fully open, of even colour and free from petal blight. Cut stems are graded by length and flower size. Shade-net and polyhouse cultivation protects the crop from rain and improves quality for the cut-flower market.
Prices rise for Dussehra, Diwali, Karthigai Deepam and the wedding season, and fall in early summer. Heavy rain at flowering damages the crop and can cause short-term spikes.
