Crop Calendar of India

When each crop is sown and when it reaches the mandis, month by month. Buyers, traders, processors and exporters plan their buying around these seasons; the price of most crops is lowest when arrivals peak and rises as stocks run down.

How the farm year runs

India has two main crop seasons and a short third one. Kharif crops are sown with the monsoon in June and July and harvested from September to December: rice, maize, bajra, jowar, soybean, groundnut, cotton, tur, moong and urad. Rabi crops are sown after the monsoon, from October to December, and harvested from February to May: wheat, chana, mustard, masoor, barley, potato and garlic. Zaid or summer crops are grown on irrigated land between March and June: summer moong, watermelon, cucumber and some maize.

The months below show the usual pattern across the main growing states. Dates move by two to four weeks from south to north and from year to year with the rains, so treat them as a guide to the season rather than fixed dates.
